The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) announced a new request for proposal (RFA) on Specialized Centers of Clinically Oriented Research (SCCOR) in transfusion biology and medicine. The clinical and basic research supported through this RFA program will support the development and application of new knowledge essential for improved safety, efficacy, and availability of blood, blood components, and plasma derivatives, and to transfer these research findings into clinical evaluation and application. NHLBI intends to commit approximately $4 million in fiscal year 2006 to fund two to three new grants in response to this RFA. Letters of intent are due August 17, 2004, and applications must be completed by September 21, 2004. More information is available online.
The electronic abstract submission deadline for the 46th ASH Annual Meeting has been set for August 10, 2004. Please note that this deadline is earlier than in previous years.
ASH is happy to announce that the first issue of The Hematologist: ASH News & Reports was sent to all ASH members in early February. Led by Editor-in-Chief Andrew Schafer, M.D., The Hematologist combines concise and provocative digests of major breakthrough articles recently published in world literature related to the field of hematology with some of the features of the former ASH News. Designed to meet the needs of both basic scientists and practicing clinicians, The Hematologist will be published quarterly in 2004. The next issue of The Hematologist is projected to go out to members in early April.

The ASH International Members Committee (IMC) is accepting applications for its new Visiting Trainee Program. This program was created to provide scientists and researchers in developing countries an opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience, technological training, or laboratory experience. Click here for an application. The deadline to apply for this program is April 1, 2004. ASH is currently accepting nominations for leadership and committee member positions for the year 2005. Nominations received for committee membership are compiled and reviewed by the Nominating Committee in early May. Based on this pool of nominees, the Nominating Committee makes its recommendations to the President-Elect, who then makes the final appointments to the ASH standing and scientific committees in consultation with committee chairs in early October.
Nominations for any of the positions available must include name, institution, and a brief paragraph to describe why the ASH member is being recommended for service. ASH State of the Art Symposium

Washington, D.C. -- The American Society of Hematology is pleased to announce the first of a series of State of the Art meetings. The first meeting will be a clinically focused two-day forum designed to identify recent advances and place them into the context of current clinical practice. It is designed for practicing hematologists and oncologists, as well as internists and family practitioners. Residents and trainees are also welcome to attend.
ASH Sponsors Research Agenda Setting Workshop on the Clinical Implications of Anemia in the Elderly ASH sponsored a successful research agenda-setting workshop on the Clinical Implications of Anemia in the Elderly on March 1-2, 2004, in Washington, D.C. The Society convened 20 prominent basic, clinical, and translational investigators from the fields of hematology, geriatrics, and gerontology as well as key staff from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to carefully review and identify the principal issues in the anemia of the aged. The Society plans to work with NIH to use the information from the workshop in a variety of innovative ways in planning for future programs.
